SLIPPERY BILL A stranger came to town one day Said William was his name. He asked of all the folks around Where to find a friendly game. Well, he didn’t have to wait too long Before hearing someone say In the shed behind Sutter’s barn Was where sometimes they’d play. Very soon he was a regular face After the night he first sat in. The other fellows thought it strange How he always seemed to win. Now and then, he would lose a hand A straight, couldn’t seem to fill Then win the next four in a row Gaining the nickname, “Slippery Bill”. The last time I remember seeing him He spoke and waved a greeting. It was that same night, they tell me The others caught him cheating. I don’t know where he went for sure, But fishing is of what I’m really fond, And there are some real big Catfish Hiding out in Sutter’s pond. Lately I’ve had cause for thought. I’m not spinning any yarn. This note was tacked upon my door. “Don’t dig for worms by Sutter’s barn”. ©11/14/03 Monty
