The Rapids

Last summer I had the pleasure of going to the largest whitewater park in the southeast. It's the perfect place to spend the day, especially when it's one of those hot, sultry days that are so common in the south. It was there that I learned just how brave I am.

If you've never been on a water slide, you are truly missing the ultimate thrill. When you look at one of these monstrosities, you wonder how people can be so bold as to ever attempt to ride one. But when you muster enough courage to climb the many stairs to what seems like the top of the Empire State Building, you know you're on your way. Panic rises in your stomach, but you think you're ready until you hear a voice in the distance comparing the ride to a toilet's flushing. At that point, you have visions of what may be in store for you on your journey through the flushing, green pipe.

Before my encounter with the slide, I stood there dripping wet, still not quite over the last ride on a tube. The tube made me feel like a toddler with a security blanket. Without it, I felt lost and alone, knowing my whole body would soon be feeling the effects of this “super” ride. As I pondered the trip ahead, I stood next to many anxious young experts who had dared to go before me. I wondered what would be my fate.

All I could imagine was a bottomless well, or, even worse, a septic tank. With all the bravery I could assemble, I knew it was my time to go. So, with feet crossed, arms tangled behind my head, and eyes opened. I prepared to meet my fate. After a quick shove, I was on my journey.

Going down the giant green tube with the water flushing violently around me, I had the physical sensation of being a self-propelled underwater missile. Panic enveloped me. My thoughts were flashing at a rapid rate. The green tunnel became a flashing strobe light. My adrenaline was in high gear, and my heart pumped wildly as I imagined my destiny. To my surprise I found myself sitting peacefully at the bottom in only two feet of water. Everything arou me was quiet and serene. The sun was sparkling through the trees, and I enjoyed its warmth on my body. I felt a little silly about fearing the ride. T'was water' nothing more!

It you ever get the chance to visit the Whitewater Park in Marietta,. Georgia, you need to take the plunge. It provides thrills and chills for the whole family. Be sure you take a chance and the FLUME that I just described. Or maybe you could ride the DRAGON TAIL. This is one that I haven't gotten the nerve to ride yet. I'm working on it.
