EYE OF THE BEHOLDER Jane and Johnny stared silently for a while at the painting on the wall. “Well, what do you think of it?” Billy asked proudly. “Do you like it?” The pair turned and looked at each other. “Did you really paint this?” Jane asked. “Yes,” answered Billy. “I’ve been working on it for a month.” “It took you a whole month to do this?” Johnny asked as he tilted his head from one side to the other. “A whole month.” Jane stepped a little closer to it and stared some more. Then she stepped back and whispered to Johnny. “Are you going to ask him or should I?” “I’ll do it,” he replied. “Billy, what is it?” “Can’t you tell?” Billy was beginning to grow impatient with his friends. “It’s a bowl of fruit.” “Ah, a bowl of fruit,” said Jane. “Ah, now I see it.” “Me too,” said Johnny. “If you look at it long enough, tilt you head like this and squint real hard; you can see the banana.” Billy folded his arms and smiled with pride. 177 words written for
