SANTA LIVES
Don't tell me there is no Santa Claus.

It's that time of year again. The days grow shorter, and the temperature drops. The trees dress in majestic array before losing their foliage for a long winter's nap. People begin to watch the clock and count the days to Christmas.

It is also the time for the emergence of what I have come to call the "Santa Bashers". They are the ones who scoff at the jolly man in the bright red suit and do everything to exclude him from the picture. They tell children that there is no Santa Claus. Why not just tell them not to have hopes and dreams? Why not tell them it's wrong to have an imagination? That is a crime as far as I'm concerned. Let the children dream.

People may argue that the children need a grasp on reality. Believing in Santa Claus doesn't necessarily exclude a grasp on reality. People say keep Christ in Christmas. Belief in Santa Claus doesn't take Christ out of Christmas. One of my favorite Christmas decorations is a statue of Santa Claus kneeling at the manger of Jesus. The true St. Nicholas was the epitome of generosity and the Christmas spirit. That doesn't take away from reality or take Christ out of Christmas.

When I was younger I wanted Santa's job. I would give gifts and candy to everyone. It didn't have to be on Christmas day. It would just be the season. It is truly better to give than receive. Giving gave me joy, and I would walk around with a huge smile on my face. People would wonder why I was so happy. The spirit of Christmas was inside of me. I even wanted to learn how to make home-made candy and toys for the children and orphans to complete the picture.

I am an adult and I know the truth. Belief in Santa Claus didn't warp my grasp on reality. It taught me to imagine, to dream, and to be creative. Those are all good things. I still believe, and it is that belief that keeps me young in heart which is another good thing.

Don't tell me there is no Santa Claus. I know better. He lives in the hearts and lives of those who believe no matter what anybody says. He still brings love, hope and joy to children everywhere and helps us stay young at heart.
