HEY LILLY

He couldn't take his eyes off her. He found himself blinking away tears. He hadn't expected her to be this beautiful!

She opened her eyes and seemed to be looking around, then closed them again as if the bright lights were too much for her.

He touched her hand and her fingers closed around his thumb. She stirred and made a sound. He was totally enchanted. She began crying again.

Someone asked if he would like to hold her. Of course, he would if he knew how. Then she was in his arms. They had told him she couldn't see very well yet but he didn't believe that. She was looking intently at his face.

He said, "Hey, Lilly." and then sang softly, "Hey Lilly, hey Lilly hey lo ~~ " Could she remember the times he had sung to her when she was in that warm dark place, out of sight?

How can you see someone you never saw before and already love her so much you can't stop crying? Her eyes fascinated him. He had seen those same eyes in the mirror every day of his life and never thought they were beautiful. But now they were almost too beautiful to look at. Very dark, like his, fringed like his with long black lashes. His own eyes repeated in the face of his newborn daughter.

She was bone of his bone, flesh of his flesh, light and warm in his arms as if she had always belonged there. He kissed the fringe of dark hair on her forehead.

         "Hey, Lilly."
