Broken Window
Bringing the ball game into your home.

This afternoon, relaxing in my recliner
with some chips and a cold drink,
watching a ball game on TV and thinking
it couldn’t possibly get any finer.

Ninth inning with Mickey Mantle up at bat.
He swings, and the ball soars over the fence.
“Crash” goes my window. What is this nonsense?
“Knock” on my door. Mickey wannabe wants his ball back.

Get out the broom and sweep the shards of glass.
Drive to hardware store to get a new pane
before the weather shifts and starts to rain,
enduring the weekend shoppers en masse.

So much for my relaxing afternoon.
Maybe I can try again sometime soon.
After all, it’s still only June.
