Just who was this man in black?

It was fast approaching midnight on a clear, dark night; one of those nights when it somehow seems to be just too quiet. Nothing stirred in the darkness and no sound broke the silence. The street was bathed in a pale peach glow, street lamps orange shimmer blended with silver moonlight.

Every house was in darkness, save for one tiny light shining out from a small upstairs window. Inside, a young girl sat up in bed straining to read by the meagre light from her bedside lamp.

From the next room came a woman’s voice, “Maryanne, go to sleep now dear, it’s getting late.”

“Okay Mama, goodnight and sweet dreams.” She leant over towards the lamp and then the room was in darkness. She shivered slightly as a small breeze blew in through the open window, then she pulled up her covers and settled down.

Soon the whole street was sleeping. Alone on the roadway outside a dark figure watched and silently waited.

An hour or so later the young girl’s peaceful rest was disturbed by a noise in her bedroom. As she drifted back from the depths of sleep she realised she was no longer alone. She opened her eyes to see a tall, dark figure standing beside her bed. Her startled gasp was quelled by a cool hand placed over her mouth. She gazed upwards into the deepest, darkest eyes she had ever seen.

The man smiled but somehow the smile did not reach those eyes, “It’s alright my dear, there is nothing to be afraid of. Just relax and this will all be over soon enough.”

He moved closer and the girl could feel his cool breath on her face and see his teeth glinting in the moonlight. She tried to move but the stranger’s hand held her firm and she could not pull away from his icy grasp. She shuddered slightly in repulsion as he pulled back the covers and his glance moved down over her body. Her heart beat rapidly in her chest and he looked down at her in fascination almost enjoying her terror. Another cold smile crossed his thin lips. “Don’t be so afraid, just lie back and you won’t feel a thing.” He leaned forward across her body and his icy lips started to caress the delicate, pale flesh of her neck.

As he got closer and closer the girl struggled and strained to be free. Then he was disturbed by a woman’s voice coming from the doorway behind him, “Well my fine fellow, what seems to be going on here?” He raised his head away from the girl but before he could turn and look round...thud!

He awoke to find himself tied tightly to a chair; he looked up to see a woman standing over him. She was tall and beautiful, dressed in a long, flowing lace nightdress.

She stared down at him, then smiled and said, “Well, it’s a strange time to be a calling on us, isn’t it Maryanne?”

The young girl who by now was seated up on the bed looked across and nodded. The older woman continued, “We’ve never really had many visitors, not even in the old days when we first came to this town.” She smiled a strange sort of smile that unnerved the young man and a cold finger of fear began to creep up his spine. “So we’re ever so pleased to see you, aren’t we Maryanne?”

“Oh yes Mama” The young girl looked at her mother and smiled, revealing long, sharply pointed fangs that glistened in the moonlight.

As the two women slowly moved towards him the young man started to scream and scream.
