My Phantom Lover

Phantom Lover

You might think it fanciful,
a case of make believe
of mythical proportions.

There are charges of illusions,
imagination gone wild,
a chimera spreading fire.

I must vigorously protest.
At best, I have a lovely haunt.
At worst, a killing vision.

As in the Ghost Dance,
there are promises unfulfilled,
aimless seduction to be endured.

Her hair is sleek and silken,
her skin soft, sweet smelling,
her lovely mouth slightly open.

Yet her lips do not kiss me.
They whisper ever so faintly
"Catch me if you can."

I am abed but not asleep.
I reach for her. Where did she go?
Why does she torment me?
