CONTENTED SLEEP When I cannot get to sleep, Though I close my eyes up tight, There is nothing else that I can do But get up and read, or write. Heat comes from the fireplace, The hearth is warm to the hand. I read from a book of poetry, That takes me to another land. The wind is blowing hard tonight, Sleet raps upon the windowpane As if trying to rouse me from a dream, It’s trials are but in vain. I stand beside the brave Horatius, As he fights, oh what a deed. I watch the leap of Rhoushan Beg And marvel at his steed. I turn the page within the book Once more to plainly see, How the fire on Lake Lebarge Thawed a frozen Sam McGee. I’ve read a dozen more When dawn does slowly creep, I’ll put the book away for now And rest in contented sleep. When I cannot get to sleep, Though I close my eyes up tight, There is nothing else that I can do But get up and read, or write. 1/26/06 Monty
