Feather Duster This month's newsletter is about nobilty classes better known as The Social Class. I love the Medieval times and I am totally into Kings, Queens, Princesses{as if you didn't know that I am a Princess! I wish!} and the like. Angel and I hope that you will enjoy this issue. Sit back and enjoy. Titles of nobilty are used to organize the upper echelons of an aristocratic society and this was popular in the middle ages and the Holy Roman Empire. Titles were frequently linked to specific lands, powers and responsiblities. All through history, hereditary titles were passed from father to son. A woman took over the power when her husband died or her father died and there were no male heirs. This could pass from mother to daughter. The head of the state was the King and Queen. "The divine rights of kings." They were subject to the will of God like everyone else. Lesser nobles were rulers of states. In this category, we have: Princes, Barons, Counts, Marquesses, Viscounts, Dukes and Knights. Nobles were giving responsiblities of raising armies and troops into battles. The titles weren't free. A title came with responsiblities and headaches. Prince and Princesses: Children born in a castle to the King and Queen. Duke: The most powerful of the landed noblity beneath the monarch and is the highest title in the English peerage. A state ruled by a Duke is called a dukery. Marquess: They were responsible for guarding border areas known as marches. Count: Has authority over a province or similiar area. Viscount: The lieutenant or deputy of a Count. Barons: Lowest level of nobilty. They are granted land from a sovereign. Knights: {My favorite!} These men fought for the King and they earned their place in social society. They were chosen by the King but unlike other noble men, they fought the actual battles. Princess seemed drawn to them more then other forms of noblity. The Knights were dedicated to the Royal Family and God. The head of the Knights was called: Grand Master, Knight Grand Commander and Knight Grand Cross. Others were titled Sergeant-at-arms. Knights Templar were members of the Poor Fellow Soldiers of Christ and they were formed during the Holy Crusades. Many nobles joined this order. Angel and I hope that you have enjoyed this newsletter. So when you read about nobles and other titles of nobilty, you have an idea that they weren't just cute, neat cool titles. If you have any questions or ideas for the next newsletter, please let Angel and I know. We will be back in March with another newsletter. Enjoy the winter. See you in the Spring!
