Valentine’s day is just around the corner. It is a time of year when sweethearts get cards and chocolates and lovers share special moments together. It is also a great time to do some thinking about LOVE. Yes, that four-letter word that gets all the girls to say, “Aw!” and the guys to roll their eyes. So, it occurred to me that some Valentine’s Day writing exercises and/or prompts would be fun and exhilarating. Just the thing a writer needs to put them in the spirit of things.

More Writing Prompts
1. She opened the box of chocolates only find a diamond ring where one of the chocolates used to be. Her mouth dropped open as she looked over at her long time boyfriend. He had got to his knees in the middle of the busy restaurant and gently took her hand. “Katie-Ann, will you marry me?”
“Yes, John Benheart I will.” Just as she uttered those words the restaurant cheered for their happiness…
2. The class was silent when the roses arrived. The whole school was participating in an anonymous rose delivery. If I had a crush I could buy a rose for that person and have it delivered anonymously on Valentine’s day. It was exciting as the roses were passed around.
Everyone wanted to see the girls faces light up. The guys could also receive a rose too, but mostly it was the popular girls that got a rose. That is why I never dreamed of getting a rose. After all, I was never that popular or pretty by my standards. However, when a rose was placed on my desk I must have flushed even a deeper red than the rose. My face must have shown the surprise. The next question I thought was who could have sent me a rose?
3. My own personal Valentines day story begins like this:
Valentines day was fast approaching and I didn't have a boyfriend at the time. I was feeling the bunt of being left out more this year than ever before. So, I thought if I don’t have someone to share it with I can surprise someone else. The person I picked was my mother.
One day after school I sat down with the flyers that were showing all the paraphernalia I could buy for a sweetie. I began questioning my mother in a very casual way. “Oh, mom if I had a boyfriend what do you think I should get him?” I would point to a bunch of things until she told me what she thought would be nice. I don’t know if she had caught on or not. However, I soon got my answer.
Finally, when Valentines day came around I presented her with a box filled with stuff I had bought her. It also contained an ornament I had made in art class just for her. The box was filled with her favorite things such as, a heart shaped box of chocolates held by a teddy bear that said, “I love you” on it’s chest. It was then that I detected the tears in my mother’s eyes and I felt overjoyed. Even if she had guessed it she didn’t expect all of that. I think that was the best Valentines Day gift I could give my mom.
So that's my story. Now I hope I've inspired you to tell your story. Did you do something similar on Valentine’s day? If so why not write your own short tale about it.
4. Valentine’s day chocolates are wonderful, but I also have a soft spot for those bears I thought to myself as I happily trudged into my office. That was when I noticed a card propped up on my desk. I was curious and opened it only to see a small note that said, “Meet me after work at such and such restaurant.”
I thought it was a joke so I asked my secretary if someone had dropped it off. She clamed up, but sent a clear message that whomever sent it wasn’t a joker. I was frustrated, the whole day I kept staring at that card. Who could have invited me to dinner? Should I go? Maybe this guy is a creep, a stalker, what if I got in trouble? But, as the time for my dinner date neared I decided that I should....
5. We were kids then, making cards like crazy and staying up late to finish them. The next day was worth it, because we put cards into everyone’s makeshift Valentine’s drop box. There must have been so many cards that were passed around with mushy words on them. It was a chance for us to reveal our crushes, secretly of course. Though now when I think back on it I wonder how secretly it was, because whenever I brought all the cards home my parents would dive at them like bee’s. They would sit at the table and read them to see what all the guys had written. I still remember how embracing it was when my parents picked up one card that was particularly mushy and read it out loud…
I hope you have enjoyed reading through some of these writing prompts. In the last section I hope you have found those inspirational enough to divulge your own Valentines day story. This is because most of those prompts weren’t made up and I was simply recalling what had happened to me on different Valentines day’s. So go ahead read them and see if you can recall something to write about as well. If not expand on them and make the story better. Have a wonderful Valentine's day fellow writer.
