THE GIFT OF LIFE

The GIFT OF LIFE

The child lay in a hospital bed,
life ebbing away, growing weak;
he had a small ghost of a smile and
blue eyes for some hope did seek.

Bone marrow might save him,
rescue him from this strife;
someone out there, somewhere
would give this gift of life!

In the next bed lay another child
who face was a pasty white,
without the blood transfusions
he might not last the night.

Rushing into the hospital
with an accident victim's heart,
the doctors knew that it gave
another person a new start.

The eyes looking out to sea
belonged to another giver;
and another life was saved
by the donation of a liver.

Miracles happen every day
and yet we sometimes shudder
to think that bits and pieces
may be given to another.

Yet we no longer have a need,
and the need is great, you know -
the gift of life is something
that we can give before we go.

IN HONOR OF ALL THE DONORS OUT THERE
WHO HAVE GIVEN OR WILL GIVE
THE GIFT OF LIFE!
