why are you so far away
I'm here waiting like an fool
the seasons fly by, like migrating birds
the magician smiles on my future

I'm here waiting like an fool
springtime brings welcome differences
the magician smiles with future promises
can I hope for wishing-well realities?

springtime this year brings too many surprises
they highlight the distance between us
though I still hope for wishing well realities
you there, me waiting, still in love

the spotlight of the distance between us
where I recite my monologues of loneliness
you there, me waiting, forever in love
why are you so far away?

"by all the rules" version
(last stanza corrected)

why are you so far away
I'm here waiting like an fool
the seasons fly by, like migrating birds
the magician smiles on my future

I'm here waiting like an fool
springtime brings welcome differences
the magician smiles with future promises
can I hope for wishing-well realities?

springtime this year brings too many surprises
they highlight the distance between us
though I still hope for wishing well realities
you there, me waiting, still in love

the dimming light of the distance between us
the seasons have flown by, like migrating birds
when will I recite my monologues of loneliness
why are you so far away?
