Are you new to writing.com, never entered a competition on it before or simply haven't a clue what is meant by bitem format. If this is the case I hope the following will be of use to you and help get you on your way to entering the competitions which request entry in this manner.
***THE BREAKDOWN***
Bitem format is simply a way to create a direct link to your piece from a post so that it can be easy accessed. With it displays information regarding the ID number, writer, the title of the piece it's current content rating i.e. E,ASR,13+,XGC and a brief description of the piece. To submit a post in this way you need to do the following.
First you to need to ensure that you've created the poem on your portfolio as normal and ensure you leave it on your port for the duration of the competition being run, also make sure that it is not set to restricted viewing (if you do the reviewer won't be able to access it when considering the winners).
Once you've created the piece simply go to the competition (My current running competition is "Dark Poetry Contest 2007 'WINNERS NAMED'" [13+]) and scroll to where the posts are.
Just above that area there is a piece of text you can click on that reads [Post a New Message], click this.
This should bring up a email type test box with 2 areas to place text.
The first small text box is for the Subject of your Post, You can type anything here, most people just pop in the name of the piece they are entering.
In the second larger text box all you need to do is type the following exactly including the brackets:
{bitem:*******}
I've placed *'s in the box above, but when you submit the post replace the *'s with the ID number of your piece which you'll find in the top black box when you view your items. At the moment new entries are starting 108 and are 7 digits long.
Sorry if I've stated a few things which are really obvious, most of the above I expect you probably know already but just thought I'd cover all bases.
