APRIL FOOL!

APRIL FOOL!

"Oh, look! A mouse!" my children shout,
and as I leap upon the nearest chair;
They holler 'APRIL FOOL!" and laugh
(there really was not a mouse there).

I get them back with "the bus is waiting"
and they grab their lunches and scatter;
I watch them as they run to catch it,
Yelling "APRIL FOOL!", but it didn't matter,

For as they ran the bus drove up and
my little trick fell flat upon the air;
I'd have to wait until later that day
to catch them when they are unaware.

My neighbor came over for a cup of tea
and the first words that she spoke
were "what's that stain upon your dress?"
and right away I suspected it was a joke.

I looked anyway, so she could have her fun,
listening to "APRIL FOOL!" once more;
then I used the old 'mouse trick' on her
and watched as her teacup hit the floor.

"April Fool!" I shouted, and I laughed
to see her roll her eyes in dismay;
I guess that the loss of an old teacup
was not such a very high price to pay...

It's all in fun, this April Fool's Day,
gives everyone a chance to have a smile.
It's such a really special day in April
that we all wait for, for quite awhile.
