In Greek Mythology, people on Earth used the gods as heroes because of their strength and what they accomplished. Today, people still have heroes. They might be a parent or parents, a relative, a celebrity or anyone who does something important to affect the way we think, so we look up to them. When I think of a hero, many people come to mind; one of those being Kurt Cobain.
Kurt Cobain is an important hero to me because he inspired a whole generation to write music. Before he died in 1994, he wrote meaningful lyrics, expressed his artistic ability with unique art and was very close to his infant daughter. Many musicians of today picked up a guitar and started writing lyrics because of Kurt. For example, when people turn on radio stations today, they hear a song, which has been influenced by Kurt. They thought if he could touch a generation and affect many people, maybe they could do the same. Thousands of people he touched in his seven years of singing was reflected at a memorial service two days after he died. Thousands of people were there to commemorate him.
The second reason why he is a hero to me is because he was so close to his daughter despite his fame. Many celebrities today who have children are seen leaving their children behind. Kurt did not like leaving his daughter behind, but when he got a chance in between tours he would stop and see Frances. He would always play with her and give her hugs and make her feel special. In his suicide note, he told his wife, Courtney Love, to keep going for Frances. He cared so much for her.
Lastly, he did not give up right away when the going got tough. He put feelings into his music, artwork and whatever else he was working on. He put what he was going through to make other people feel better or think, “If he feels like this and got through it, so could I.” Personally, my thought on it is it takes a lot of talent to have an effect on a person to cheer the person up and affect how the individual was thinking.
The above reasons are why Kurt Cobain is my hero. He inspired a generation to write music or play an instrument, he was the voice of the generation, he loved and took care of his daughter and he put what he was going through in music or artwork and made people feel a little better about themselves. “I’m so lonely, but that’s okay, I shaved my head, and I’m not sad, and maybe I’m to blame for all I heard… I’m not sure…” That line was from “Lithium”, one of the greatest songs written by Nirvana.
