CHOCOLATE BARS AND COFFEE

CHOCOLATE BARS AND COFFEE

I am very prone to snacking
when it comes to a noonday meal,
chocolate bars and coffee
I devour with a healthy zeal.

Then today I went to lunch
with a good friend of mine,
She said "Let's eat Chinese"
and her idea sounded fine.

The buffet was delicious,
so much from which to choose.
I took a bit of everything
sure no weight I'd lose.

It satisfied me completely,
my need to try something new;
when I read my fortune cookie
I knew the meal was overdue.

The fortune that it gave me
was something else, indeed!
"Be careful what you're eating,
or you'll become a soul in greed."

I couldn't get a "doggie bag"
You had to eat everything there;
when we left, I was feeling
mighty full and mighty fair.

The thrist we had was evident
as we drank a bottle of water;
I started thinking, even then,
I'd eaten more than I oughta.

After two a.m. I fell asleep, wish
I could say the sleep was blessed,
but the scary nighmare entered,
and you might just guess the rest!

I woke up shivering and cold,
some nightmares last beyond sleep;
so I got back on the computer
thinking thoughts so very deep.

It's 4 a.m. and still I write
while trying hard to forget,
but I still see bits and pieces;
that memory haunts me yet.

NO MORE will I forsake my lunch
of chocolate bars and coffee,
for richer fare that evokes
the much darker side of me.

Once more my eyelids are closing,
and I'm through with words tonight;
If I only had some chocolate bars
my morning coffee would taste right.
