Smothering Reality

The magistrates of morality
Dictate lies like ice cream sundaes topped with nuts.

Mmm, so good, the license and the lust.
Let’s not entertain values anymore
For they are impediments to our gratification.

Eat, eat to your fill,
Pick your flavor and scoop it out,
Dish it out to everyone who will listen.

Forget value, honor, nobility, integrity, honesty,
They are the flavors of a lost generation
Hey, if the lie gets a few extra bucks, who cares?
We can feed more hungry faces their ice cold illusion,
And isn’t that good?

You can’t trust anyone anyway
Because there is always some creepy radical right-winger
Preaching about personal responsibility,
And true moral integrity,
And the enduring nobility of honor and character.

Who needs them?
We have the magistrates of morality
Giving us the lies we want in liberal flavors of colorful joy.

Don’t tell me it takes work,
Don’t tell me I have to fight for my freedom,
Don’t tell me self-indulgence is wrong,
Protect me and feed me.

I want the illusory safety of my whipped topping,
Nestled with the cherry on top.
The good life, for free, for me
As long as I can get it doled out
In some public program of statutory well being,
Regulated happiness for the masses,
One thick dollop of hot fudge
Smothering reality under the guise of equality
For everyone who doesn’t deserve it.
