Escape Only In Dreams

A dark echo clouds my dreams.
I wade aimlessly.
I’m shrouded in shades of gray.
My mind jumps into a state of unrest.
I begin to panic.
Is there no way out of this prison?!
I pause only to find
The ground beneath my feet
Is no longer there.

I tumble back, falling helplessly.
Falling out of control,
I can only ask why?
Why is this happening?
Why did this happen?

I am afraid.
What happens next is uncertain.
Will it end?

Hours pass.
I’m still falling.
I lean back, and see what I
Want to believe are shadows,
Shadows moving on a separate plane.

What are they?
I reach my hand out trying to touch something.
I fall below it, but notice I have another chance.
I pass by these shadows continuously.

I close my eyes and reach
Out with both hands as far as I can.
I feel myself flip toward my hands
As I feel them touching something firm.

I move my feet to where my hands are.
I feel almost weightless.
Everything moves so slowly, here.
I push off with my feet, and
Reach my hands out to grab ground, again.

I repeat, moving more quickly, now.
I see a light down across the plane.
I keep pushing, faster,
Faster.
My tail moves with me,
Keeping me planted on the ground.
I push faster with all four of my paws.

I notice a smell I couldn’t before.
I smell grass.
Grass after a freshly fallen rain.
A bright light surrounds me,
Blinding me.

I emerge in a large grassy plain.
It was wet with rain,
But it wasn’t raining.
The sky was blue,
And there was a vibrant breeze
Throughout the air.

I turn onto my back, and
Gather the rain droplets into
My amber fur.
It feels so good.
So refreshing.

I awaken
Believing I had not dreamed.
The world around me is dark
And gray.
It surrounds me and I begin to fall.
I’m afraid.
