The Dream Wizard
It is, essentially, a rhyming story - ten syllables every line.

Still editing this piece to work out the kinks in the rhyming and rhythm. Not even really close to completion.

He could not sleep, no matter how he tried:
monsters in the closet, shadows on the wall.
They scared him so much, he started to cry.
The bumps, creaks and thunks making his skin crawl.

Laying in his bed, covered to his chin,
too scared to get up and run to his mom.
When he closed his eyes, the monsters would grin.
He clutches covers tight with sweaty palm.

Just when he was going to swallow his pride,
he heard a soft whisper inside his mind.
It sounded like someone was at his side.
"Don't fear, you're not alone," it said so kind.

"Let your worries be whisked away and sleep.
Your imagination is a great thing.
Let the monsters flee from the thoughts you keep,
and show you the wonders that it can bring."

They were words his mother had said to him
when he told her about his nightly fears.
"Say, 'Monsters, let me be so I can dream,
my imagination can bring me cheer.'"

Those words he said in a quiet whisper,
and soon found himself lured into a deep sleep,
away from his fears, to his own caper
where his most sincere desires do creep.

He found himself atop a tall stone wall
overlooking a flowered countryside.
Dressed as a knight, his stature proud and tall,
"I do not look like me," he said with pride.

In front of him stood a wizard and mouse,
the wizard with his hat, pointy and white.
The mouse on his arm in a purple blouse,
holding on with all of his mousy might.

"It's about time you got out of your bed!"
To his surprise, it was the mouse who spoke,
instead of the wizard, whose robe was red.
The wizard just stood there, the mouse to stroke.

"We've been waiting for you for a whole week,
hoping you would want to seek out your dreams."
He stared at the mouse, expecting a squeak.
When it did not, he suspected a scheme.

The wizard pointed to a large locked chest
while the mouse said, "Only you have the key.
You can open it each and every night,
so your good dreams you have a chance to see."

"This man with me is your Good Dream Wizard,
taking you safely through all of your dreams.
To see him, you must fall to sleep closed-eyed,
and must do so without crying, it seems."

"Repeat the words, just like you did this night,
and he will come to you, just like today.
But enough of this talk of what is right,
because now it is time to run and play!"

And so, for that night, he was a brave knight,
rescuing the beautiful Princess Grace
by making the dragon fear and take flight
just as the knight and princess embrace.

That was the first night with his Dream Wizard
who is now with him each time that he sleeps.
Sometimes he comes with a bright green lizard,
others, that same mouse to his dreams soon creeps.

The monsters no longer hide where he's near,
knowing that, from sleep, they cannot keep him.
So, if you need to drive away your fear,
your dream keeper can scare away the grim.

Whether it be wizard, angel, or dog,
dinosaur, kitten, frog, or fairy,
let your imagination clear the fog,
so your good dreams, through the night, will carry.
