Disappearing Man
Waking up has a whole new meaning.

It all started the morning he woke up to find his left pinky was gone. Not a very important finger in the grand scheme of things, but still it was odd. It hadn’t been cut off, there was no blood, just a white scar as if it had been missing for years. Still he didn’t think much of it.

The next morning, his ring and middle fingers were both gone.

When his left arm disappeared up to his elbow, he decided he had better call the doctor. That conversation could have gone differently. “Why do you need an appointment?” the nurse asked.

“I seem to be disappearing.”

Some pages were flipped. “The doctor can see you July 24 at nine am.”

“That’s over three weeks away,” he protested and sighed. “But I’ll take it.”

When he woke up the next morning, his left foot was gone. All that was left was his ankle and the rest of his leg. It was odd, although he couldn’t see anything, he could still walk normally. He tried very hard not to look at the blank space where his foot should be.

As the days passed by, more and more of his body parts began to vanish. It wasn’t as if they were completely gone though. He could still feel pain when he hit one of them and he continued on with his life as before. It was hard to put shoes on feet that weren’t visible though and he closed his eyes when zipping up his pants after the unfortunate morning when he woke up and everything below his waist had vanished.

By the time his doctor’s appointment rolled around, the only thing that could still be seen was his head. He waited impatiently to be shown into an exam room and then stripped down to his underwear as he was instructed. He was waiting for the nurse to take his vitals when he happened to glance over at the mirror. His head had disappeared.

With a sigh, he picked his clothes back up. He didn’t think there was anything the doctor could do for him. He pulled off his boxers and folded his clothes into a bundle. He would just wait until someone opened the door and then slip out.

Suddenly he understood how Rodney Skinner in the movie League of Extraordinary Gentlemen felt. He truly was the invisible man.
