Susannah,Character From A Novel

I will be writing about the main character Susannah from: Susannah's Garden By: Debbie Macomber. It is a good novel and one of the best I have read in awhile. Very Liz shared some ideas about writing that she learned. I will be including: who I think the character is, her thoughts and feelings, why she does the things that she does, background, her past and what happens to her in the story to change her.

Susannah returns to her home town to help her mother find a new place to live because her mother is upset over her husband's{Susannah's father} death and has become forgetful. Susannah keeps dreaming about her ex-boyfriend Jake who disappeared from her life when she went to Boarding School in Paris. She is happily married to someone else with two children but she feels she has to find Jake to resolve why he disappeared without a word. Susannah grieves for her brother who died in a car accident while she was at Boarding School and her father wouldn't let her come home for the funeral. She walks around her mother's garden that she has loved as a child and she feels her father let her down. She never got to find out why Jake broke up with her after she left for Paris and never got to say good-bye to her brother. The character is 40 some years old with a daughter Christine in college and a seventeen year old son but I think she feels like a lost child whose father let her down and whose mother suffers friom dementia. Susannah's daughter Christine shows up to help her with her mother but falls for a young boy named Troy who looks like Jake and the young man's mother hates Susannah and tells her that Troy is Jake's son and he was with her and loved her, not Susannah. Susannah dislikes Troy and feels that he is Jake's son and wrong for her daughter. Troy uses Christine and black mails Susannah for money so he can break up with Christine and get out of her life. Susannah does this but learns some shocking news.

Susannah's brother didn't die in a car accident. Her ex-boyfriend Jake died because he was high on drugs and Doug was involved in the incident. Doug comes back to town as a man named David who dates her best friend from school named Carolyn. Carolyn doesn't find out who David really is until Susannah does. Susannah realizes how much she loves her husband Jeff and that Jake wasn't the man she thought he was and that Troy will be just like him and she is glad to finally put the past behind her. She knows her father was a judge and the police worked with him to cover up Jake's death and Doug's involvement but no one knows the truth except her family and Carolyn. Susannah is happy to go back to her life in New York with her husband and Christine mends her broken heart. Your past can come back to haunt you. I really enjoyed reading this book.
