last dance
a slow to calm
four a.m. agitation
few will admit
the party is over

drinks on me
champagne, beer, whiskey
Perrier
for those overly joyous
we've laughed,
certain people cried
new year's parties
always favor misty eyed resolutions
toasted promises
may possibly be kept
in solitary moments
of gushiness~
men tapping shoulders
women lending lace hankies~
"Auld Lang Syne"
repeats drunkenly
fervor guaranteed
time ticks irrevocably

tomorrow
after several hours' sleep
well steeped black coffee,
calmer family festivities
with tender goodwill speeches
wait patiently…
afterwards ordinary celebrations resume
but January First pledges,
forever constant,
bring ever changing life
