Shielding my eyes from the sun, I propped up on my elbow at his nearing footsteps. Gulls swooped and dipped over the rolling surf, a lazy ballet. The salty air breezed over me in gentle, warm strokes. I squinted up into his face.
“Beautiful. I love it here.”
He sat next to me on my towel, our thighs touching, and lifted my hand in his. Piercing green eyes. So direct. I watched his lips as he spoke.
“I love you being here.”
He uncovered the bowl he’d returned with. Pineapple. He fed me, leisurely, watching with intent as the sweet juice coated my lips, dripped onto my chin, my chest. He leaned close, to kiss it away.
We wore swimsuits, and touched only briefly, but the heat in our eyes betrayed the surface languor. I felt nude, open for the world to see, and caressed by the promise in his gaze. Savoring the anticipation, we relaxed in the sun. Waves of heat washed over us, and I felt utter peace.
Bliss. I will remember this moment for the rest of my life.
