Escape From Alcohol
I can't drink normally... so now I am ready, with God's help, to be sober again.

"Alcohol gave me wings to fly,
Then it took away the sky."

It gave me a new beginning
And made the world stop spinning
So I could get off and play
It made me feel SO okay

But then when the next day came
I never did feel the same
As I did the night before
When I wanted to drink one more

My nerves were shaking to the core
The room spun and my head was sore
Most times I managed to arise
And go to work with bloodshot eyes

Hangovers were hard to bear
I'd just pretend that they weren't there
It was torture beyond compare
"Never, ever again!" I'd swear

But to myself, I lied again
And to my God, He was my friend
I really was my most sincere
Then later on, I'd start to hear

The crazy voices in my head
"Don't stay sober - get drunk instead!"
"What's the use, besides?" they'd say
"Tomorrow is another day"

"Let's celebrate tonight, today!"
Surely there's a better way
To be happy, right here and now
I want to live, but don't know how

I try to give it all to Him
Cause I know nothing, save for sin
It's what I do, and very well
Sometimes I think I'll go to hell

But there's a reason I was spared
He must have seen, and really cared
He showed mercy on even me
I don't know why, but hopefully

I'll not discard His gift this time
I'll just accept it as divine
Help that came from up above
I should be grateful for His love

I must remember that I'm free
To give back what He gave to me
I'm learning now to love me, too
I think that I'm supposed to do

His will for now, and so I pray
That I'll stay sober, just for today
And I'll be strong no matter what
Until the day my coffin's shut

I don't know what the morrow brings
I don't know why the bluebird sings
I do know this, without a doubt
I can no longer go without

My Higher Power's help and love
It's understood; it's all because
He's in control of everything
Whatever we need, He will bring
