No Rest For The Weary (my baby killdeer) Killdeer in alarm Around the nest The babies have hatched No time for rest. The cats all come calling During the night Mother killdeer Sounds the alarm with fright. The chicks do all scatter During the day Running this way then that No time for play. Father killdeer With diversion in mind Distracts all the hunters No chicks will they find. This vicious cycle Continues night and day Through snow and rain Even hot sun ray. Twice now this year From January through July I have watched chicks grow Then off they did fly My baby killdeer.
