ODE TO A SOLDIER

You've known the trenches and the sound of shells,
you've lived through at least a dozen hells
but still you dream of family and home
as you listen to the sound of an unmanned drone.

How deep the feelings as the war sinks in,
the battle cry, you know you have the will to win
and live to see another day - you pray, you pray,
as the desert sun sinks low on another day.

Freedom and peace is what you crave the most,
you love our country, from coast to coast;
our flag still flies high and is revered by all
who answer the need of the country's call.

I owe you my life and my liberty, at best,
and I know you have been put to the test;
in gratitude, and in my thoughts and prayers,
I want you to know I'm one who cares.

Stand fast, and tall and true
our country depends on you.
