Where She Stands

In her shadow,
Fresh off the boat.
Naked, without country or kin.
Cold with fear of rejection.
Nameless, in the eyes of America.
Sparked with hope of a new beginning.

She watches over us,
Implanted from overseas, herself.
Our future in her copper eyes,
Her upraised arm,
The torch of enlightenment.

Through poverty,
Through prejudice,
Through ignorance,
Living through the fear in others' hearts,
My life is better for it.
I know where I stand.

I know where she stands.
