Safe in Sobriety
"One day at a time" for me. Some people can drink successfully... I can't.

I really don't know what to say
Except that I wish I could stay
In here, safe from life, and away
From things that could lead me astray

I hope, when I get back out there
That I will remember to care
About this gift, sobriety
Instead of notoriety

I now have a new life, it's true
And it's up to me what I do
If I'm grateful for every day
My so-"dry"-ety's sure to stay

If I try to give it away
It will come back somehow, some way
But if I keep it to myself
It might as well be on a shelf

Like a long forgotten trophy
That's no longer a part of me
I have to continue to learn
It's the only way I can earn

My seat at the meeting places
I smile at the smiling faces
'Cause we all know that we've been there
To hell and back, and unaware

That addiction was killing us
That's why we now make a big fuss
When someone picks up a new chip
Or even if they have a slip

We're here to support each other
A place like this, there's no other
Group in the world that understands
What it means when we all join hands

We all have one thing in common
I guess it's what makes us human
We all need some help, now and then
No one doesn't need a real friend

Or a Power that's greater than
Just one woman, or just one man
We can't do this all by ourselves
Even Santa has to have elves

To help him accomplish his goal
To have help is good for the soul
So then we can pass it around
The love that we share does abound

I hope I'm more like that one day
I hope I can give it away
Just like it was given to me:
My life, my hope - sobriety!
