When Immortals Die
By Brian Marais

On the sandy beaches the Greeks had come,
Where sons of Troy and Myrmidons bled,
A bloody war by Agamemnon waged
That turned the sea crimson red.

At the city of Troy the Greeks had come,
Faced with self-righteous Trojan wall.
Menelaus and Paris for Helen did fight,
But prince Hector steadied for a brother’s fall.

Outside the city of Troy, a battle ensued.
Sending every man a king had,
Agamemnon spear-headed the attack,
Who thought men would live while iron-clad.

Sand stained red from Greek and Trojan blood,
But giant warrior killed many before his death.
Agamemnon’s force withdrew their attack
After Trojan prince sundered Ajax’s last breath.

Driven back to tents the Greeks retreated,
The Trojans halted by a wall of fire,
Agamemnon’s need for Achilles heightened,
But Achilles didn’t fight ‘til need was dire.
