A Poem for My Daughter
My only daughter turns 18 this week. I wrote her a poem. Please read and enjoy.

To My Daughter, Audrey

I begin my poem to you this way,
Oh, how I remember your birth day.

You came to this world with your own sweet sound
And lots of hair on your head so round.

I held you close and whispered sweet songs in your ear
So you would know you didn’t need to fear

While rocking you to sleep I thanked God for giving you to me
And asked him for guidance to show you what you would need

I helped you walk and read and talk
I watched as you put on the dresses and each little sock

The years went by, you fell here and there
Had bruises and bumps and casts to show off your dares

You found makeup and high heels and dresses and hairdos
And true friends who have helped you through the blues.

I watched you fight some tough battles, sometimes in vain
My heart would hurt because I couldn’t stop the pain

But each one strengthened you and you moved on
Finding grace and courage and strength until the pain was gone

I always knew you would need to fly on your own one day
And I wondered how I’d feel and what I’d say

All I know is I want to hold you close again and whisper songs in your ear
Because this time it’s me who has the fear

I’m not ready to let you go yet, my dear Audrey, but I know I must
Because it is the way of life, and I have to trust

That you will shine your own light wherever you go
And you’ll show compassion, kindness and love to those you know

Never forget that I am wherever you are and I’m on your side
And until I can get to you, God’s love and grace will be your guide.

Love, Mom
