Independence Day
thoughts on the 4th of July

Fire lights the sky
with colors of the rainbow:
green flashes,
gold sparkles
bright against the night sky.
Rockets of fire,
celebration of freedom,
independence.

Free of strife and monarchy,
locked into free slavery-
bureaucratic tyranny,
personal gain,
freedom to exploit
and unchecked power.
A reign of balance gone,
democracy overthrown
while a republic reigns-
all for the power of one
over the good of many.

Freedoms are stripped;
liberty is blindfolded.
Fire lights the sky
while we cry in the dark
searching for freedom,
reaching for liberty,
striving for independence,
following the fire in the sky.
