The Aeneid –Part IV

And the Queen, whose eyes were red,
Was draped in pain across her bed.
Wounded by a passion
She couldn’t see,
She sat sadly up, and put her head on her knees.

Her thoughts were on the day before,
When Aeneus came knocking at their door
Oh his fine face
Had taken her in,
And in so doing made her head spin.

As Dawn was pushing down the night
Apollo’s torch shining about its bloody light
Dido turned to Anna
Who patiently tried
To understand her sister’s wanton cries.

“Oh woe is me! Alas! Alack!
Why can’t that wretch give my heart back?
His face is so noble!
And just look at that arm!
You can tell from this he’s no pleb off a farm.

Anna my dear, I’m beginning to worry
Just thinking of him gets my heart in a flurry.
It beats far too fast;
I’m unable to sleep!
This cannot work! I’ve a kingdom to keep!

Not that I’m thinking it would work anyway
Because you know my poor husband took my heart that day…
When Pygy killed him –
OH good gods! so tired was I of our torch and our bed
Why is this dude stuck in my head?”

And Anna watched with a sceptical eye
As Dido lamented with tears and cries.
But the repeated pleas
For the pallid shades,
Made Anna pray to Zeus it was just a phase.

“Blast me to Erebus! –or if not
Send me somewhere I can rot!”
Dido sobbed again.
And silver drops fell from her eyes
And she watched the sun with fire dying deep inside.
