Jigsaw

How did you know we’d fit so well together?
Like pieces of a puzzle finally found
in the mess behind the couch, lost forever,
so separate, so distant—then perfectly snapped
right into place. All four of us stood,
completing the image, shoulder to shoulder.
How did you know the four of us would stick
like superglue, too hard to wrench apart
when the thickened center dries? High school geeks
too opposite to attract, but our poles
pulled together, south-to-south, north-to-north.
How did you know we’d stay so strong, so glued?
Undetachable, indefinable—
my parts fading into yours, so seamless.
How did you know we’d fall apart and shatter
one by one? Each edge uplifted, disturbed—
the cardboard back decays, the bold colors
peel and curl. Nothing’s left of our picture
except for a square right over my heart,
right next to the hands that tore it apart.
