Meteor Shower
The stars were murderous: their endless light stabbed through the hidden corners of the dark, and like a tidal wave of black and white exploded into diamond-dusted sparks. We’d watched the veil slide slowly through the sky while standing with our backs pressed to the fence. The splinters dug in through my palms and thighs; the colors churned and swirled, bright and dense. Dull heavens cried to see what they had made, and filled our yard with smoky ruby tears. And when the sky collapsed on its cascade, the knife-like light flashed once, and disappeared. We knew there was no single moment when we’d ever see the stars like that again.
