COLUMBUS DAY

The history books will tell you the great tale
of how a man named Columbus decided to sail;
He had high hopes and a vision of new land,
but the cost would be great, you understand.

He approached the King with a request for gold;
the King shook his head, the lad was too bold!
Queen Isabella overheard the lad's request,
and gave him the jewels to fund his great quest.

"The world is flat! You've made a mistake
giving up your jewels to that reckless rake!"
The King stormed up the hall and down,
wearing no smile at all, just a big old frown.

Queen Isabella tossed her head and said
"you old fuddy-duddy, might as well be dead.
Show some spirit, show some courage, dear;
don't be the kind of king that shows fear!"

So Columbus sailed off onto the ocean blue,
and kept on sailing until land came into view;
the world was not flat, of that he was sure
as he followed the dream that held much allure..

You'll have to read your history book, friend,
to see how it happened and how it would end!
Why did the name of America come to be
when he thought it looked like Isabella country?

A day in his honor we will celebrate and claim
this day of October ninth in Columbus' name!
Tell the truth now, if it were just up to you,
would you dare to sail off onto the ocean blue?
