glaring headlights
surfing the depth of life in the middle of the night

When I opened up my eyes

I saw the purple heavens

And the glaring headlights

Of all the cars around

And the gaping blackness

Of distance's tunnel

I felt one cold raindrop

Running down my spine

To the tick tock of the clock

I turned my eyes upward

And let my long hair tangle

In the gnarled branches

Of the nearest palm tree

I heard the sound of the wave

After it was stabbed

As it lay bleeding on the beach

Waiting for my cry

I saw the calm black love

And heard the storming sea

As I sat there on the rock

Waiting for the sky to clear

The serenity devoured me

And I succumbed to all the rage

Of that calm black sea

I saw a light in the kitchen

When I stood by the door

Her back was to me

And mine to her

Still I saw her eyes

In the reflection of the dirty car window

Hoping for me

While the city slept

And only one car groaned

I watched the clouds passing by the moon

For hours, I wandered at the sea

Watching all the colors turn black

And beautiful

And so painful
