Raising the Bar
poem from a wife's point of a view in an emotionally abusive relationship

You’ve set your standards
up so high
the bar is somewhere
in the sky.
Your requirements
I could never meet
to even reach half
would itself be a feat.
You let me know
I don’t measure up
whether its humiliating me
or telling me to shut up.
My jokes aren’t funny
cause you don’t laugh
Your silence reminds me
that I’m only half.
Half the woman
half the wife
only worth
half of my life.
This marriage doomed
because I’m not the one
couldn’t measure up
to the height of the sun.
Try hard as I can
but I’ll never be enough
Your demands outrageous
your requirements too tough.
