THE BLACK AND WHITE DAYS.

To spend the night with Grandma is a treat for my young brood
They love to hear me tell of earlier days.
It doesn't take so very long to get me in the mood
To educate them in the olden ways.

They call them "Black and White days" and here's the reason why
Each time they look at books or photographs,
Old videos, home movies, filmed in days gone by,
They notice there's no colour, and they laugh.

"When you were young", they ask me,"was the sky above all grey?"
"Or was it blue, the way it is right now?"
"And were the cars all painted with the same old can of spray?"
"How could you tell which car was yours, oh how?"

It makes me sort of chuckle that they find it hard to ken
"Yes, the world was just the same as it is now,
"But technology was limited in the days away back when
"To make a colour film, we knew not how."

"We didn't have a tele and not everyone a car,
"To get about we used a tram or bus.
"A telephone within the house was luxury by far,"
"How on earth did people chat, or contact us?"

"We used to write them letters or send a telegram"
"A what?" and I explain the system then.
"Oh, that's old hat, why didn't you just text them, dear old Gran?"
"There were no mobile phones to text!" A'hem.

"What did you do at night time, if you didn't have TV?"
"We listened to the radio or played,
on a stereo, our records (just like a big CD),
"Or entertained ourselves with a charade."

Just telling them of olden days it lets me reminisce
Of how much family fun it was we had,
So once a month we make believe it's 1956
Get back to basics, and it makes them glad,

To visit with our loved ones and fill our days with fun
Modern trappings of today are out of sight.
It brings us so much closer just to chat to everyone
And bring back days that were all "Black and White".
