A Modern Tragedy

There is fear and sadness on their faces,
a very large crowd has gathered around.
Police are looking for clues and traces,
he lay dead on the cold December ground.

He had gone to the store on an errand,
when a shot rang out about halfway there.
Another young man with a gun in hand,
who did not know him or would even care.

We've seen this picture many times before
and it has become almost commonplace.
Death of youth hurts all of us to the core,
another boy killed, another young face.

The answers seem to be just out of sight
as another young boy lay dead tonight.
