FOR HEATHER

I walked alone beneath the stars one night,
remembering days when we were together.
In solitude my tears flowed free, I miss her so;
my love, my wife, my very soul - my Heather.

For years she has always stood by my side .
and I know that being a Marine's wife is hard.
I wasn't home to help through the tough times
or the good times lazing about in the yard.

Yet for some reason she showed me courage
and strength to face leaving her with the chore
of raising our children, being both dad and mom,
for she knew what I was serving my country for.

Now I am serving miles away from my home
and even a Marine can be feeling quite torn,
living with happy memories, her picture and all
the letters I've saved, read often, so well-worn.

Miles can never separate the hearts of those
whose love will endure throughout all time;
Time cannot change the closeness we feel,
the love that is sent in each and every line.

At home she's not well and I'm going through hell
for I want to be with her and hold her real tight
to tell her how much I love her and always will;
praying that somehow things will turn out all right.

Life can be cruel, and the battle she fights
is as hard as any of the battles I have seen.
I'm beginning to think that her unfailing courage
outshines that of any United States Marine!

I return to my bed with thoughts in my head
of the woman who means more than life to me,
I sleep and I dream of a cool mountain stream
and once more her dear smiling face I can see.
