Smile at me, then turn away,
I might not break the surface, but I can try.
And I have tried to learn the secrets of the deep.
There are too many questions though,
Not enough answers to know the truth.
Waves have broke against you, time after time,
I know, I can see the scars they left in their wake.
You stood strong against them, a cliff,
But I can see where you begin to wear thin.
Some secrets you think can't be told,
I can see the remains in every line on your face.
It shows in the way you hold your shoulders,
Yet you steel yourself against the tide of time,
One man like a cliff against his own past.
Still though, those windows to your soul,
They remain closed, hardened and seeming empty,
Like cold blue water.
