Green With Leaves

GREEN, WITH LEAVES

         "It has to be something not too personal. It doesn't have to be expensive but it can't look cheap. What can I give her?"

         "Why give her anything?"

         "Because everybody else will."

         "I didn't know you liked your boss."

         "Actually I don't but that's beside the point."

         "Get her a plant."

         "Her office looks like a conservatory now."

         "So, get her a plant. She likes plants so get her one.

          "A plant ~~ she gets a lot of plants,"

         "So what's one more? Or~~ how about something homemade, like a tray of Christmas cookies?"

         "She's on a perpetual diet. Perish the thought she should gain an ounce."

         "Well then stick to the plant idea."

         "I suppose. I'll go to the florist tonight."

         "That's my girl. Now can we talk about something else? I don't think you anguished this much about my present! For our first married Christmas, too."

         "No I didn't have to. I know what you want."

         "What?"

         "You don't know what you want? What do you want most?"

         "You can't wrap that up and put it under the tree and I sure hope I don't have to wait till the 25th to get it. Do you want me to go get the plant so you don't have to go all the way over there tonight?"

         "Do you know anything about buying plants?"

         "Do you?"

         "Okay do me the favor and get her something green. With leaves."

         "Well that does narrow it down but I'll try. Green with leaves, see you."
