"Sleeping With the Lights On …"
We have some monsters in our room. They hide beneath the bed. They only come out when it’s dark And fill our hearts with dread. They do not like the light, you see. They much prefer the dark. In daylight they will hide away; At night, they hunt their mark. So many nights we’ve lain in bed And tried in vain to sleep. But if we try to close our eyes, From ‘neath the bed they creep! Their shadows dance across the floor Cast by the moon’s dim light. I hope they will not see us here Tucked in our blankets tight. We hear them crawl across the room And scratch at every wall. I pull my knees up to my chest And make myself feel small. But then my brother had a plan To leave lights on at night. If our whole room is all aglow, They can’t give us a fright. So here we are with eyes squeezed shut Against the lamp’s bright glare. The monsters have all run away. They gave up in despair! ... ... ... ... ... But sometimes when it’s almost dark Before the lights are on, I think I can hear muffled sounds … And I sure HOPE they're gone! Meter: 8-6-8-6. Rhyme pattern: abcb
