Best Opening Paragraph
dizzyduck : "Perched up on the ledge of a skyscraper, out of sight of eager helicopters so as not to draw attention to myself this early in the game, I gaze down at the flurry of activity around Citizens’ Bank, the oldest and most trusted bank in the city. In the past thirty minutes, the bank has become a regular scene of commotion. Several helicopters hover around the tall building, their big black bodies reflected in the glass sides; they look like giant bloodthirsty flies around an animal carcass. Most helicopters are from the local news channels; one is from the police; one from the national news. All have their eyes and viewfinders glued onto the events unfolding below them."

"Flies. I never noticed the flies before. No, that’s a lie. I noticed them. Everyone notices them at one time or another. But I never cared about the flies. Why should I? I didn’t have the time to bother, time to worry. I had dreams."
Lorien
"In the beginning of Lolita, Vladimir Nabokov writes murderers as the greatest wordsmiths in the world. I don't think he's right. I don't think it has anything to do with someone's sins. I think it only has to do with the brilliance. Murderers are just too often the most brilliant of citizens."
Renegade
"Sitting on his black charger at the edge of the army camp, Tular stared in horror at the pillars of orange and blue flame spiraling through the ancient forest of the elves in the distance, engulfing each great tree they neared and leaving nothing but glowing embers and white ash in their wake. Thick, black smoke darkened the noonday sun as gray ash fluttered down to the earth like snowflakes. The general glared at the dark flakes drifting onto his tan robes and angrily brushed them away but the sinister snow left behind smeared tracks in the satin."
Ally-Brains Like Pasty Oatmeal
"Detective Stan Brookshire rubbed his eyes and ran his fingers back through his thick black hair. It had been one hell of a day. He stood up and tried to smooth his rumpled suit out to the best of his abilities. He walked out of his office and down the hall to where his partner’s office was. As usual she was there typing away on her computer. Detective Jane Trinity was undoubtedly typing up their latest reports that they had to send to the Chief tomorrow."
ε╟╢я
"The four humanoids fled through the midnight corridors pursued by creatures from their worst nightmares. Their dull, brown cloaks fluttered rapidly behind them as they streaked through the complex."
mindwing
"Scarfoot heard his sister scream when the long-toothed one attacked. Before he could run to her rescue, the ground before them erupted and the group scattered. He heard the long tooth one scream as something killed it, but the many-legged one came and he had to hide. By then he knew it was too late, his sister was dead. Nevertheless he wondered about her baby. It was almost old enough to walk, so if he found a mother willing to help him feed it, he might save the little boy. He went to look for his sister’s body."
fromtheinside
"The road to truth is paved by the bodies of the ignorant and painted with the blood of the innocent. Throughout our history, we have seen this over and over again. It is a lesson we have learned well, for it is essential to our survival."
Katzendragonz : "The young apprentice strained to hear the words that rasped and clawed their way out of his dying master’s throat. The taste and smell of death hung heavy in the darkened room.
“Only one in each millineum is allowed this knowledge,” the old master croaked. “As I am passing it on to you, now that I stand at death’s door, so you must vow to pass it on when your days shall be at an end.” He paused. “Do you so avow?”"
spidey is studying
"Katie dreamt of pleasant things while the world around her died.
Faded lines still marked her face from the celebration the night before. Dressed as a fairy, complete with glitter, eye shadow, dress, and shimmering wings, it was her favorite Halloween yet. A thick pink comforter surrounded the slumbering eight year old who lay in her bed under a pink canopy. Visions of lollipops, sweet tarts, chocolate candy bars and other assortments of candies filled her head as she dreamt of memories, oblivious to the death and destruction happening just outside her window."
