Placing the rest of the mail on the counter, most of it was junk anyways, Gavin glanced over the glossy postcard of St. Basil's Cathedral. Across the top of the card, above the brightly colored spiral rooftops, were the words "greetings from Russia." There was only one person who would be sending him a postcard from Russia, John.
Gavin felt ill from the excitement of knowing that John had been thinking about him for long enough to send the postcard. It was a good thing Mason wasn't around, so that he could enjoy the moment of reading what John might have to say. He knew it was probably wrong to feel this happy over a postcard from his housemate but he couldn't help it.
After a few moments of staring at the front of the card Gavin turned over to read what John had written on the back.
Hi. Things are going a bit different over here but I should still be home the same day as planned. Hope things are going well with you. I miss you and will call when I can.
John
It wasn't very long and it didn't say exactly what Gavin had been hoping it would say, but John never said what he wanted to hear. Three words on the postcard, however, gave him hope. John missed him, that was all he needed to know for now.
Hearing the door open Gavin slipped the postcard in his pocket before turning to greet his boyfriend. "Hey there."
"Hey," Mason set the paper grocery bags on the counter. After glancing at the other objects near the bags he turned to Gavin, unaware of the things going through Gavin's head. "Did we get anything good in the mail today."
After a slight hesitation, Gavin replied, "No, nothing."
