wind chimes faintly whisper secrets, by ‘n by
         (…by ‘n by…)
crisp leaves rustle, whistling tunes of by ‘n by
blowing mem’ries farther; time will
weep for tomorrow’s sorrow
sweetness fades and airy clouds bring
sadness birds may borrow
                   by ‘n by

under leafless trees I sing now, by ‘n by,
         by ‘n by;
phrases mourning lover’s partings, by ‘n by
may I kiss you lest you leave me?
summer love dissuaded
one day I’ll hold you close again!
no hearts masqueraded!
                   by ‘n by

winter frost has brought its penance, by ‘n by—
         — by ‘n by —
though the leaves forget your laughter
I can not… for absence doth make
yearning hearts grow fonder…
now I wait for springtime’s warming
through the fields I’ll wander,
                   …by ‘n by…
