IN VAIN I LOVED AND GAVE MY HEART-winner
Frustration in love

IN VAIN I LOVED AND GAVE MY HEART: award winner

In vain I loved and gave my heart.
What folly, woeful, on my part!

Love was from me always too far.
It left but a scandalous scar.

My love’s fate could not have been worse.
Now my life is, itself, a curse.

I, too, had my love ambitions,
Now reduced to sad renditions.

For some, love is a rosy bloom;
For me, it was simply my doom.

I had dreamed that someone’s sweet love
Would shade me from the scorch above.

But when awake, I was alone.
Shadows darkened; the day was gone.

• Written in aa, 8-8 format

• Patterned on the popular Hindi movie song of the sixties, given below. It was earlier written as an entry no. 403828 in {item{959857}. Created as independent item on 26 March 2007. [NOTE--It is an original song, but the thoughts of frustration in love are loosely patterned on those in the old movie song indicated. [ I do not translate movie songs or publish such translations on principle because that might involve copyright issues. Even otherwise, since my poetry is almost always within strict rules of traditional structure and rhyme, it is almost impossible to translate a rhyming traditional poem / song in one language to a rhyming traditional poem / song in another when the two languages concerned are as diverse as Hindi and English].

MOVIE--Baaraat
YEAR-- 1960
SINGER—Mukesh
LYRICS—Majrooh

muft hue badanaam, kisii se haay dil ko lagaa ke
jiinaa huaa iljaam
kisii se haay dil ko lagaa ke
muft hue badanaam

(gaye aramaan leke, luuTe luuTe aate hai.n
log jahaa.N me.n kaise dil ko lagaate hai.n) 2
dil ko lagaate hai.n, apanaa banaate hai.n
ham to phire naadaan 2
kisii se haay dil ko lagaa ke
muft hue badanaam

(samajhe the saath degaa, kisiikaa suhaanaa gam
khulee jo nazar dekhaa, tanhaa khaDe hai.n ham) 2
tanhaa khaDe hai.n ham
din bhii rahaa hai kam
rasteme.n ho ga_ii shaam 2
kisii se haay dil ko lagaa ke
muft hue badanaam
