Spring in the Suburbs
The wattle’s gold is already spent When jasmine wafts its heady scent. Spring’s arrival is a great event, And winter’s end brings no lament. Rosellas and rainbow lorikeets Flash brightly in their search for treats; Suburban mowers all compete, Every second yard, in every street. Red bottlebrush makes a fine show; And honeyeaters flit to and fro; Hailstorms pass and strong winds blow; Rain pours down, making gutters flow. The breeze grows warmer every day; More people walk on each byway. Parks resound to families at play; White limbs at last see light of day. Birds build nests and raise their brood; Now winter’s over, there’s lots of food. Folk clean house of things accrued, Work and play bring a cheerful mood. Between winter’s cold and summer’s heat, Life renewed makes the link complete: Not just country feels nature’s beat Suburbs do too, and life is sweet. Linda October 2006
