Stolen Memories
(A Shakespearean sonnet) She sits at the piano, straight and tall And plays the songs they knew so long ago. The photo of an old man helps recall The young man that he was – her handsome beau. Nearby, upon the table she has placed A vase of deep red roses, just the same As those that once her wedding bouquet graced The happy day she took her husband’s name. A flash of lightning, followed by a roar, Reminds her of the wartime bombs that fell, And how up in his fighter he would soar; How often had she thought it was farewell. But though these mem’ries come to her so clear, They’ve fled the mind of him she still holds dear. Linda 4th April 2007 Written from a prompt. Use these images in a poem: - a flash of lightning; - a photograph of an elderly man; - someone playing an upright piano; - a vase of red roses. For:
